Libya rebels. After Egypt and Tunisia, it’s the third country in North Africa wanting to put an end to the dictatorship of his rais, Muammar Gaddafi. The revolt is spreading, the cities of Benghazi and Tobruk, Eastern Libya and part of the western regions, are now under the control of the opposition forces; the red and green flag, banned by the regime for the last forty years, waves everywhere. The Libyan people are claiming their souls at the price of thousands of deaths: a massacre led by Gaddafi with the bombing of his own people, and summary killings performed by mercenaries who shoot at anyone taking to the streets to demonstrate. ‘The electricity and medicines in hospitals are missing” is the desperate appeal to the nearby Italian government for immediate aid.
Our photographer Luca Sola, is reporting for us this civil revolution day by day: a work in progress from the free cities of Tobruk and Benghazi towards Tripoli, the last stronghold of Gaddafi, who has recently declared: “I am ready to die but not surrender”.
La Libia si ribella. Dopo Egitto e Tunisia, anche il terzo paese del Nord Africa vuole mettere la parola fine alla dittatura del suo rais, Muammar Gheddafi. Dilaga la rivolta, le città di Tobruk e Bengasi e intere regioni ormai, l’Est della Libia e parte della Libia Occidentale, sono ormai sotto il controllo delle forze di opposizione; ovunque sventola la bandiera rosso e verde, messa al bando dal regime negli ultimi quarant’anni. Il popolo libico rivendica la propria anima al prezzo di migliaia di morti: una carneficina comandata da Gheddafi con bombardamenti sulla propria gente e uccisioni sommarie ad opera di mercenari al soldo del rais, che sparano a chiunque sia sceso in piazza a manifestare. “Manca l’ energia elettrica e i medicinali negli ospedali”, è l’appello disperato al vicino governo italiano per un aiuto immediato.
Il nostro fotografo Luca Sola ci sta raccontando la rivoluzione giorno per giorno; un “work in progress” dalle città liberate di Tobruk e Bengasi, proseguendo verso Tripoli, ultima roccaforte di Gheddafi, che ha recentemente dichiarato;: “Sono pronto alla morte, ma non alla resa”.
