The island of Sicily is at the collapse due to the unstoppable arrivals of refugees coming from Tunisia by sea. The number of immigrants exceeded that of the inhabitants of Lampedusa, who are now facing humanitarian and health emergency more than ever before. The island has become a bivouac in the open, with makeshift tents built by the refugees themselves, for the lack of places in the provided shelters; food and water for several days was not sufficient for all immigrants. Italy demonstrates unprepared to face an “invasion” which had been vastly announced. Only in the last days of March, the government has put in place special measures, with the support of the army, volunteers and ferries to the island to restore livability. Il numero di immigrati ha superato quello degli abitanti di Lampedusa, che si trovano ora più che mai di fronte all’emergenza umanitaria e sanitaria.
